Your Chances of Admission to Duke After Being Waitlisted

Historically, Duke University regularly turns to its waitlist — and often the school reaches deep into its waitlist.

Yet unlike the Offices of Institutional Research at Duke’s peer institutions, Duke University’s Office of Institutional Research does not maintain many Common Data Sets for public consumption. Duke currently keeps only two Common Data Sets on its website — for 2021-2022 and 2020-2021. And while, for most universities, the Common Data Set for 2021-2022 is for the Class of 2026, it’s for the Class of 2025 for Duke. Likewise, the Common Data Set for 2020-2021 is for the Class of 2024.

So while there is little data available, the two years that Duke has reported its waitlist data shows that the school relies on its waitlist to fill its incoming classes.

It should be noted, however, that the 381 students admitted off the waitlist to the Duke Class of 2024 was an aberration since all highly selective universities, like Duke, turned to their waitlists in record numbers that year. This trend was due to so many admitted students choosing to defer their enrollment by taking gap years because of the pandemic.

So while Duke doesn’t typically admit hundreds off its waitlist, the school often turns to its waitlist — and, in our experience over the last 30 years, the institution does not do so sparingly.

Your Chances of Admission to Duke After Being Waitlisted with Ivy Coach’s Help

Over the last 30 years, around 43% of students who first come toIvy Coachafter being placed on the Duke waitlist earn admission. It’s a figure we’re mighty proud of.

So why does Ivy Coach have such success with Duke’s waitlist? It boils down to our tried and true method of optimizing a student’s chances for admission after being placed in limbo. That two-step process is as follows:

  1. Complete Ivy Coach’sPostMortem application review. We need to see what a student did right and what they did wrong. The narrative we help craft can’t be out of left field. It must be consistent with the story conveyed in the application — just told in a much more compelling way.
  2. Submit a powerfulLetter of Continued Interest. Most students know they should submit a letter after being placed in limbo, and most know they should do so promptly after learning of their decision. Yet most students submit thewrongkind of letter — letters filled with brags and updates on everything they’ve done in the three months since they first applied. Ivy Coach’s letters contain no peaco*cking or updates. It’s a big reason ourwonderfully weirdlove letters are so successful. We motivate admissions officers to want to root for our students. We dare them not to offer them admission!
